Check engine warning light: meaning and what to do
What it means
The engine computer stored a fault code. It can be as small as a loose gas cap or as big as a failing sensor or catalytic converter.
Can I keep driving?
Usually yes, carefully and for a short distance. The check engine light means something needs attention soon, so have it checked in the next few days rather than ignoring it.
What to do
Tighten the gas cap first. If it stays on, get the code read (many auto parts stores do it for free) within a few days.
